Burke Celebrates 'Bike to Work Day'

Fairfax County Department of Transportation staff welcomed cyclists to the Burke Centre VRE 'Pit Stop' Friday morning.

For the third consecutive year, cyclists were treated to a Bike to Work Day pit stop at the .  The Burke stop was one of 58 throughout Virginia, D.C. and Maryland. 

Cyclists stopping in Burke were treated to snacks, t-shirts, water bottles, and other prizes.  The pit stop was hosted by Fairfax County Department of Transportaion staff.  The Bike Lane from Springfield, Va., provided free bike tune-ups. Representatives from Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling were also on hand.

May is National Bike Month and Bike to Work Week is May 14 - 18, 2012.  The League of American Bicyclists began Bike to Work Day as part of Bike Month in 1956.  In the Metropolitan D.C. area, Bike to Work Day is organized by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.  Participation has grown from a few hundred in 2001 to 11,000 participants in 2011, according to Bike to Work Day's website.
