Burke Church Offers 'Ashes to Go'
Burke United Methodist Church sponsored "drive-thru" and VRE station Ash Wednesday options.
Burke United Methodist Church made it easy for commuters to participate in Ash Wednesday.
From 5:30 - 7:30 a.m. in the church parking lot, Associate Pastor Morgan Guyton offered "drive-thru" ashes to commuters, while Senior Pastor Larry Buxton provided ashes at the Burke VRE Station from 6 - 8 a.m.
The church's move is part of a national Ash Wednesday trend aimed at servicing increasingly time-crunched commuters.
"Ash Wednesday provides a unique opportunity for Christians to represent our faith and express our religious freedom in a non-threatening but very visible way by wearing ashes on our foreheads throughout the day," said Guyton. Guyton said these early morning options compliment the usual evening services.
"We don't want to come across as proselytizing, but want to be available to all Christians who would like to represent their faith on Ash Wednesday, regardless of denomination or church membership," said Guyton.
Burke United Methodist Church will also offer ashes inside the church from 9:45 - 10:15 a.m. Their traditional Ash Wednesday service is at 7:30 p.m.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the 40 days of preparation for Easter. Ashes are placed on the forehead as a reminder to Christians of mortality and need for God.

That's just pure laziness, on EVERYONE's part. I think it's shameful. This is about worship and respect, not convenience. Going to church should be a respectful and reverent, not like running to the Sheetz to pick up a gallon of milk. I honestly can't believe people today and how badly they just don't get it when it comes to the church and God. I feel very sorry for them.

Catholics / Methodist / Baptist will do anything for money-a donation. How pathetic can it get. Hey God look at the pathetic pastors pushing through pathetic people who can't even respect You enough to stop and hold a more appropriate service. im not even christian any more and that appalls me. the ashes arent supposed to be a "non-threatening but very visible way" of showinging off how christian you are and trying to force your religious views down everyone elses throats. they are there to be a personal reminder of the sacrifices of your god and a sign of respect and humility. something that modern christians know little to nothing about.

I know alot of people who would go for Ashes if they had that opportunity. Some are lazy that is a fact, but the others are afraid of crowds or for other physical reasons, etc., Not just to show others their faith. Some are unable to get out of the car without great difficulty and would benefit from something like this.

So the comments seem to imply that one cannot have a relationship with God -- or bear quiet witness to their faith -- without going into a church. Anything less is shameful, lazy and disrespectful? No wonder people are leaving the organized church in droves. John Wesley went to where the people were, rather than forcing them to come to church. This does the same thing. Amazing.
