Burke Weathers Irene

Hurricane fortunately a "non-event" for locale

Leaves covered the roadways Sunday morning in Burke, but otherwise it was business as usual for most residents.

Shopping center and church parking lots were filling up by 10 a.m.  At Einstein Bagels on Old Keene Mill Road, the line was out the door.  Heather and Eric Swartz and their two young children were having breakfast.

"It was windy last night, but not as bad as Isabel," said Heather.  The Swartz's say they lost power briefly, and they only knew because their digital clock was blinking.

"There were leaves and small limbs in the roads and yards this morning," said Eric.  "It really was a non-event," added Heather.

Heather's mother lives in Cape Cod, and she choose to move inland ahead of Irene.  Heather said she was surprised by New York City's early decision to close the subway system.  "I think they could have waited longer before making the decision," she said.  "But after Katrina, no one wants to error."
