Burke Woman Loses Thousands in Green Dot Phone Scam

Woman purchased $13,000 in Green Dot cards, gave scammer personal information.

A 70-year-old Burke-area woman answered her phone this week and was told she’d won $3.5 million and a brand-new Mercedes, reported Fairfax County Police.

But there was a catch. The woman was instructed to purchase Green Dot payment cards, and provide the caller with the account numbers.

Police said the woman purchased $13,000 of the Green Dot cards and provided the numbers to the male caller, along with her social security number, date of birth and other private information, as she was instructed.

Green Dot cards are pre-paid, loadable cards similar to other brands of credit and debit cards. Detectives caution these scams are not isolated to any particular financial institution.

By the time a relative discovered what had happened, it was too late and the victim lost much of her money.

Fairfax County Police said this is another in a series of scams Financial Crimes Unit detectives are seeing across the region. They warn, as with many of these scams, once money is wired or sent away, there is very little that can be done to recover the funds.

Detectives are working to educate the public about these types of schemes and ruses.

I think it's more of a "advanced fee fraud" than Green Dot phone scam, simply because the Green Dot system is just a payment method and is not responsible for this scam, BUT the same cannot be said for Western Union which almost facilitates these frauds. There have been plenty of instances when they could have done more or could stricten the rules, but they chose to turn ignore it and cash on in on the scams as well. When you get calls like that report them to police and www.whycall.me along with the number that called

Thank you janicesheller. Just for clarification, the police called it a Green Dot scam in their news release.

There are many sites scamming WITH green dot moneypaks. A new one is usoverstockoutlet.com. They WILL take your money and they have NO PRODUCT!!! US Overstock Outlet claims to run the green dot funds through PayPal. I have confirmed this is false. They claim to be rated A+ by the BBB, but they are not even listed in anyway with the BBB. They have Visa and MasterCard logos on their homepage, but will not accept their use. EVERYTHING about this site is false and designed to scam people enticed by their fantastic deals on exercise equipment, playsets, and generators. STAY AWAY!!!!!!
