Hundreds Show Support for Chick-fil-A in Springfield
Chick-fil-A and Mike Huckabee supporters flocked to the Springfield location for lunch on Wednesday.
Springfield's Chick-fil-A was packed with supporters during lunchtime on Wednesday, which former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee deemed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," with long lines of customers waiting to get in the door and cars waiting for the drive-thru.
Most of the customers were there to show their support for Chick-fil-A and its president, Dan Cathy, who recently shared his beliefs on the biblical definition of marriage. Cathy's fast-food franchise has since suffered backlash from supporters of same-sex marriage.
"We're here to support Dan Cathy. We're on 'Team Jesus,'" said a woman who was waiting in line at Chick-fil-A.
The controversy has sparked an ongoing debate about same-sex marriage and its place in politics, which was evident today at Chick-fil-A.
A man in line from Franconia said that he hopes the long lines are "indicative of what's going to happen this fall." He added, "I hope all these people will follow Huckabee."
"I think it's wonderful to see all these morally healthy people today," said a man from Rose Hill.
A few soldiers from Fort Belvoir were also in line at Chick-fil-A.
"We're in support of Dan Cathy and his morality. We share the same Christian beliefs," one soldier said. "And we're hungry!" joked another soldier.
Althought most of Chick-fil-A's customers were there today for political, social and religious reasons, a few were there simply for the food.
"Is today free food day?" asked a customer as he noticed the long line.
There were no protesters at the Springfield Chick-fil-A.
