Last Chance: Submit Questions to Tim Kaine
The candidate for U.S. Senate and former Virginia governor will answer questions in Dulles at AOL this Thursday. George Allen, Kaine's likely challenger, spoke at AOL May 4.
Tim Kaine, the Democratic candidate for the open Virginia U.S. Senate seat, will appear at the AOL campus in Dulles Thursday at 1 p.m. to speak with AOL employees and other guests.
George Allen, a former U.S. Senator and former Virginia governor, appeared at AOL May 4, and Patch covered the forum, asked questions submitted by readers and invited a few readers to join the program.
Patch will be covering the forum and inviting a few readers from each Patch to attend in person. If you'd like to attend the event, send an email to patchpolitics@aol.com with your name, address and telephone number.
What Would You Like to Ask Tim Kaine? Tell Us in the Comments!
Patch editors will be questioning Kaine at the event, and we'd like to know what we should ask. What are the most important issues in the election? What would you like to ask Tim Kaine?
Allen and Kaine faced each other in a debate last December. Allen faces several other GOP challengers in a primary June 12, but he is widely considered the favorite to be the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate. Sen. Jim Webb (D) chose not to seek reelection.

The social services in this country are being over loaded and drained by immigrants, some illegal and some not. I do not believe it is fair for Americans to be denied services because of long waiting lists filled with people from other countries other than America. American's should have priority, particularly the elderly, the disabled, and children. Federal and state governments have allowed this for too many years and now it's almost impossible for an American to get any help when they really need it because of long waiting lists filled with people from other countries. It's not FAIR! I don't believe it's right for a strong young person from some other country, man or woman, to receive any kind of help before an elderly American or a child, be it medical care, housing or anything. They are the ones draining our social services, NOT Americans! Please make this an issue of concern and discussion.

Daphne, your comment does not contain an actual question. More importantly, can you provide proof of a single instance where a "strong young person from some other country ... received help before an elderly American or a child"? If there is no evidence, then it's just another bigoted rant from some right wing xenophobe. Stop listeneing to right wing bigots like Rush and Beck and repeating their nonense.

Daphne you are a lone voice in the wilderness!
I am an immigrant, albeit a legal one. I earned the honor of being a US citizen through service in our Military (Special Forces) during the Korean and Viet Nam wars. I welcome legal immigrants and their contributions to our country. However, I resent the do-goodder attitude of granting the benefits that we, as Americans enjoy and have earned, to people who broke our laws and came here or stayed here illegally. I do resent standing in line for services doled out to people who have no legal right to be here and who are getting these services, courtesy of the American taxpayers.
I would love to hear Mr. Kaine's views on this subject.

Look, if people come on here and post blatant bigotry as facts, I'm going to call them out on it. I'm still waiting for the proof I asked for and no, "Go down to your local social services office and Look! Listen!" does not constitute proof. This is the right wing MO - keep telling the lie over and over again and it eventually becomes the truth in the eyes of so many in this uninformed electorate of ours. So Daphne, nothing personal, you're probably a very nice person, but I take great umbrage at those kinds of misleading generalizations without any foundation of truth. Sorry.

To be fair, a lot of counselors and/or parents are also pushing kids to expensive small schools for liberal arts degrees that will not pay their debt. If you go to an in-state school in a desired major and desired industry, you're going to get a job and be able to pay your debt. In the accounting/consulting industry in the DC area, my staff in years 1-5 receive head hunter calls every week offering them positions and turnover is high because there's a lot of offers out there; and at mid-level management, those calls increase to twice a week.
A lot of people protesting student loans went to expensive private schools, got an additional graduate degree (possibly more) to avoid entering a tough job market, and are now over-qualified in an industry with no opportunities.
Go to a state school and learn a skill that the economy supports, and you'll be fine. Check the statistics of job offers and starting pay for the accounting, engineering, technology, and healthcare industries.
The best quote from this week's Chronicle article: "I had devoted myself to the
world of cerebral activity. I had learned a practical skill that was elitist....perhaps I should have been learning a skill that the economy supports."

As a senator, I would like to know what Tim Kaine would propose to stop “illegals” from exploiting a tax loophole that gives them “additional child tax credit” for supposed dependents who don’t even live in the U.S. or have U.S. social security numbers? This is costing U.S. taxpayers an estimated $4.2 BILLION per year according to the Treasury Inspector General's office.
For more details on this, you can link to this Indianapolis news story at http://www.wthr.com/story/17861738/will-lawmakers-act-to-close-tax-loophole-for-illegal-immigrants

Dear Mr. Kane:
I have a great deal of respect for you as an individual, but like many in the country I have become disillusioned with the dysfunctional nature of the two party system.
It seems very, very clear that the Republican party has been taken over and is now dominated by a very small, self serving group of special interests intent on imposing their will on the masses via biased media outlets such as Fox News, so called "talking heads" such as Rush Limbaugh, and hiding behind Super Pacs.
In Northern Virginia, many of us feel there are fairly serious over development problems. Developers seem to, at will, dictate their demands onto the residents with the county government consistently backing them up, and many would say, acting as "agents" for the development community. Developers have been funding nearly all Democratic candidates. One Democrat, Gerry Connolly, has been promoting relaxed eminent domain seizure laws on behalf of developers. The last meeting of the Democratic Party in Virginia ended with what sounded like an economic plan spoon fed to the party by the development community.
Considering the growing and destructive influence of this special interest on the Democratic party, why should anyone vote for you? How can you and other Democrats win people back?

What alternate universe are you living in? The last 3.5 years has more than illustrated that, in fact, the traditional Democrat party no longer exists. What has replaced it is a socialist, big federal government-oriented, driving up our debt into the mega-trillions, spending our great-grandchildren's earnings, smothering the "worker" and all businesses, entity, attacking the first amendment and now the fourth with drones, Obamacare, an assault on the Constitution, the Supreme Court, just to name a few. And now, legislation is being considered to cede our power and wealth to the UN. A divide and conquer philosophy has replaced all past Democrat principled stances in order to divert voters from the failed policies of this current dominating party and dominate the political landscape with a "campaign that never ends." If we allow the Democrats as they exist today to continue to govern, then we face bankruptcy and ruin.
So, Mr. Kaine, how do you separate yourself from the politics of our current administration, or do you plan to continue on their course? And, more importantly, do you believe in the sovereignity of the US, or should we be controlled by an all-powerful UN?
Richard Holmquist

Controlled by an all-powerful UN, "Concerned Citizen"? Speaking of alternate universes!
I'm thrilled to support Tim Kaine for Senate. He's a day/night alternative to his competitor. George Allen was an ineffective senator (fortunately), and is among the worst governors that Virginia ever had. Do you recall his promotion of a Disney theme park in Manassas? Wouldn't it have been great for Mickey Mouse to give us all a perspective on slavery and the Civil War? All those great minimum wage jobs and Orlando sprawl? How about all those prisons that Allen bankrupted the state to build? How's that transportation network working out for you in Northern Virginia? Allen has fought climate change legislation, green energy projects and fuel efficiency standards. As governor he installed a rabid anti-environmental activist, Becky Norton Dunlop, as Secretary of Natural Resources in Virginia. Oh, and then there was that "macaca" incident that outed Allen as a good ole' boy racist.
Let's focus this race on reality, results and records, not on science fiction and speculation.

I attended the talk (thanks, Patch!). Gov. Kaine answered my first question above. He said there is a scientific consensus that humans are affecting climate and that he's an absolute believer that humans are affecting climate - in contrast to his opponent who questions the science of climate change. He said he was a supporter of cap & trade legislation, but he thinks a more acceptable method of moving away from a carbon-based economy in today's political climate is to offer financial incentives to green technology and take away subsidies to oil companies. To those like George Allen who scoff at green energy, he points to the fact that 35% of the new power that's come online since 2007 has been wind power - second only to natural gas. This is equipment that can be designed and manufactured in the USA. He thinks government should support that effort.
