As an animal control officer, I had the joy and privilege of working with a variety of wild animals, but one of my favorites was the squirrel. I had many opportunities to care for and release orphaned or trapped squirrels back to the wild, and even took some in my foster care and released.

"Love them or hate them, squirrels abound in suburbia," said Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Annandale.  They're sponsoring a squirrelly program with stories, games and songs on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.

Participants age four and above are welcome. There is a $5 fee per person. Register online or call 703-222-4664.

Hidden Pond Nature Center is open 11 to 4 on winter weekends.  You can watch for squirrels from trails around the pond.

Burke's Wild Bird Center can advise you on what to feed squirrels, or how to discourage them from stealing from your bird feeders.

Richard “Thor” Thorington, the Smithsonian’s squirrel expert, plans to give squirrels "a paw up," according to the Washington Post.  “By putting out extra sunflower seeds,” he said.

Karla, I love your squirrel vs. dog standoff photo! Thanks for adding it, and ask your friends to submit photos, too. This could be quite a funny photo gallery!
