Sidewalk Ready for Terra Centre Back-to-School
Improvement part of long term plan to address pedestrian safety.
Burke residents have won a victory for improved safety. The new sidewalk connecting Pond Spice Lane and Burke Centre Parkway at is open.
hosted a ribbon cutting on August 25, with members of the Burke Centre Parkway Pedestrian and Motorist Safety Task Force.
The sidewalk improvement project was part of the county’s 2009 Spot Transportation Projects list. Construction began earlier this summer, and was completed ten months ahead of schedule, according to Bob Ayers of the Fairfax County Department of Transportation.

Cook said the sidewalk project is just one step among many to improve pedestrian safety along Burke Centre Parkway.
In 2010, Cook created the Burke Centre Parkway Pedestrian and Motorist Safety Task Force.

The task force submitted a Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) grant request to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. In May, the board endorsed it, and sent it for the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The $400,000 grant would be used for sidewalk improvements along the north side of Burke Centre Parkway from Burke Commons Road along Burke Centre Shopping Center. In addition, it would provide for a safer crosswalk at Marshall Pond and Schoolhouse Woods roads.
Cook said the funding decision should come by next spring.
In the meantime, he's planning a community meeting this fall to share the task force perliminary report.
The Burke Centre Parkway Pedestrian and Motorist Safety Task Force includes members of the Burke Centre Conservancy, Fairfax County Public Schools, Burke Walks Safe and Green, the Terra Centre Parent Teacher Association and staff from the Virginia and Fairfax County Departments of Transportation.
