The Great Outdoors and Sports Gift Hunt

Looking for a gift for an outdoor enthusiast? These local stores have you covered.

So, your best friend loves to run and you want to find her a gift that supports that passion. Maybe your dad is back at the gym (we are quickly approaching the New Year's Resolution portion of the holidays, after all) and wants a new pair of running shoes. Perhaps your sister has been dying for a new bike, or your mom wants new camping gear. Whatever your outdoor gift dilemma, here are some local stores that can help!

The Bike Lane
9544 Old Keene Mill Road
703-440-8701

Looking for a cycling related gift? Look no further than The Bike Lane! This family-operated shop carries everything you need to find the perfect gift for the bike lover in your life. The Bike Lane has a bicycle for everyone, from road and urban bikes to mountain bikes and bikes for triathalons.

If you're out to find a smaller gift, you'll find accessories, tool kits, and clothing as well. The Bontrager Flat Pack, $64.99, packs all the tools need to fix a flat tire (mini air pump, 2 tire levers, and a coupon redeemable for an inner tube)  into a seat pack for easy carrying. Choose from a variety of eco-friendly water bottles, like the CamelBak Stainless Steel Better Bottle (sizes start at $23.00). If you can't decide what to buy, you can always pick up a gift card, and send your cycling enthusiast in to talk to the owners. Customer service is important here, and the owners will happily help find the best products for your loved ones.

Potomac River Running
5715 Burke Centre Parkway
703-978-0500

This local chain opened its first store in Loudoun county in 2003, with the intent to encourage healthy lifestyle choices in the DC Metro Area. Seven years later, Potomac River Running boasts eight storefronts throughout the area, but their family friendly focus and commitment to customer service remains unchanged.  Beyond merchandise, Potomac River Running offers various running opportunities, from fun runs and group runs to marathon training.

Potomac River Running carries a variety of running shoes, which should be fitted directly in order to best match an individual's running needs. If you already know the footwear you're looking for, you'll find a wide variety of companies and styles here. You can also find a variety of seasonal running and walking apparel here, from moisture-wicking clothes to hats and gloves. Accessories include sunglasses, watches, massage tools and GPS.  Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it here, along with prompt and polite service.

If your loved one is interested in fitness but not certain which sport they'll love, you can always consider a health club membership! Besides the national clubs such as , you'll find some great local clubs to check out.

Burke Racquet and Swim Club, at 6001 Burke Commons Road, has been in operation since 1985, and offers a variety of amenities. You'll find five tennis courts and a racquetball court here, as well as an Olympic sized pool. There are group fitness classes and personal trainers, as well as a rock climbing wall and a game-based gym for kids. Membership fees for everything (acquatics, racquet and climbing) start at $60 a month, with varying prices of initiation fees depending on what programs you sign up for. Through December 31, you can buy temporary memberships for friends and family at the cost of 30 days for $60.

Olympus Gym and Fitness Center, at 10400 Premier Court, is a two-story gym with machines, free weights, and much more. There are two branches of this gym- one in Burke, one in Sterling. Membership fees apparently start at $10 a month and are free to cancel.

Jungle's Gym Fitness, at 9250 Old Keene Mill Road, is a family-owned business with three locations in Northern Virginia. The gym features classes, personal training, and babysitting services for members.

Curves, at 6003 Burke Centre Parkway, is a women-only gym based around a 30-minute workout using cardio and strength training machines. The concept draws women of all ages and fitness backgrounds, as it allows women to get in and out of the gym quickly while going about their lives.
