Where to Buy King Cake in Burke for Mardi Gras

Are you planning to celebrate Fat Tuesday in Burke next week? Some area bakeries are serving up king cake for the holiday.

Burke residents not heading to New Orleans for Mardi Gras on Feb. 12 can still celebrate "Fat Tuesday" a little closer to home by enjoying a little king cake.

Some Burke area bakeries are selling king cakes in celebration of the holiday.

The colorful cakes, traditionally made out of sweetened yeast bread and sprinkled with colored sugar, are baked as part of a Mardi Gras tradition in New Orleans.

Did you know: Mardi Gras is a Christian holiday celebrated in various countries where it is also known as Carnival, according to history.com?

According to NOLA.com, king cake was traditionally served to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, which is usually recognized on Jan. 6. The cake is now served until Mardi Gras.

There is a tiny, plastic (sometimes gold or porcelain) baby Jesus inside of the cake. Per tradition in New Orleans, the person who receives the slice of cake with the baby in it is in charge of making the king cake the following year, the NOLA article states.

Here's where you can buy king cake in Burke:

  • Great Harvest Bread Co. is selling 8" x 12" king cakes for $16.95. The cost includes beads, coins, and a baby to hide inside the cake. Residents can call in advance to order several cakes.
  • The Swiss Bakery is selling king cakes for $12.95 each. According to an employee, the cakes serve about six people. Orders can be placed in advance or customers can pick up one of the ready-made cakes in the store that day.
  • Giant on Burke Centre Parkway has king cakes for $6.97.
