Win a $50 Gas Card from Patch

Enter our gas card giveaway today!

Update 9:40 p.m. May 21, 2012 - This contest is now closed. Thanks for participating. You can still add your comments if you have some great gas or money-saving tips, but only comments entered by 5 p.m. Monday, May 21 counted as entries for the give-away.  The winner has been notified via email.

------------

Gas prices are slowly coming down, but it's still pricey to fill up the tank. Nationwide, the average gas price is about $3.72, according to the Daily Fuel Gauge Report. Regular unleaded gas in the Burke area can be $3.80 or more.

Patch feels your pain and we want to help — even if it’s just a little bit. So we’re giving away a $50 gas card in the hopes that we can make one lucky reader's Memorial Day weekend excursion less expensive.

Entering this contest is easy. All you have to do is post a comment below this article to tell us about one thing you’re doing differently to save money on gas (or what you're doing to save on other things so you can afford gas). There’s no need to write a lot. Just a sentence or two will do!

We’ll conduct a random drawing from among the comments entered by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 21.

In the meantime, if you're looking for the cheapest gas (and road conditions) in the Annandale area, check out the Burke Patch commute page.

Good luck, road warriors!

We buy our gas where we can get a bit more for our money. That means we either use our Giant loyalty points at a Shell or buy gas at the "cheap" gas station on Old Keene Mill Rd. Combining errands into a logical path is also another way to do it.

Since shoe leather costs less than gasoline, I am walking more to local stores, the library and the bank. Does nagging count, because if so, that's what I do to get my husband to do the same.

I fill up at work (in Gainesville) where the gas is usually 20 cents cheaper per gallon. I'm also walking to places more often and not driving as much.

What I'm seeing in these posts, and hearing from co-workers, family and friends, is that it's all about planning ahead. I too have learned I can save money if I look before I leap. With so much online these days its easy to find out where I can save before I head out the door.

I've been attempting to combine more of my outings in order to make one large trip to a bunch of different places rather than running out a bunch of separate times. I also make sure my tires are properly inflated, overtime that makes a difference in gas mileage!

I walk my kids to school now... we used to drive one mile each way... it added up. Also we car pool with neighbors/teammates for soccer/little league practices and games. Trying also to be more effective with grocery shopping so I don't have to go as often.

Don't buy gas in Burke, Put your car in Neutral on the downhills, use your foot (NOT CRUISE CONTROL) on the highway, Use higher gears if possible (lower RPMs use less gas), Idle as little as possible, avoid traffic, roll up your windows if you can bear it, cut back on electronics use in your car (Radio/satnav/ipod/chargers), if you can bear it turn off the AC, make sure your tires are properly inflated and get rid of anything you don't use on a regular basis in your car (gotta shed that extra weight!)

I traded in my car to get the new Prius C which is actually really affordable under 20,000 and my gas went from being about $250 a month with the higher gas prices to $75, and I drive quite a bit.

We use the Giant and safeway rewards, along with the filling up at the cheap gas at the corner of Old Keene and Lee Chapel. Considering a more economical car in the near future, though, as my commute is going to double (to Silver Spring) in June. :(

We bundle trips and plan the route ahead of time, trying to avoid left turns and heavily congested areas. We're also using the GIant gas points to save and preparing more meals at home.

I love these tips! Thanks, everyone! I have a Ford Fusion Hybrid, which helps cut back on gas costs, and we're lucky to live close enough to a grocery store to walk there. I'm also a huge fan of the Giant gas rewards points. Keep the tips coming and we'll crown a winner (by random selection) next week!

Also, remember this week is Bike to Work Week and national Bike to Work Day is Friday. Burke Patch will be hanging out at the VRE station's watering hole Friday morning, so come say hello! More info on Bike to Work Day is at http://patch.com/A-tp1Z.

We try to plan our errands, and run them all at the same time. Also, we have a Shell card that gives a rebate as well as we are Giant Food shoppers and get that savings on top of the rebate. Every penny helps!

I only go out on a day that I can schedule a full day of errands, after I have mapped out the most mileage economically route. I also only purchase gas at the Express Stop on Old Keene Mill Road, but only if I am going past it. I don't go out of my way to save 18-20 cents a gallon on regular gas.
