New Trail to Connect Burke and Rolling Road VRE Stations

The Fairfax County Park Authority will hold an informational meeting regarding the proposed Pohick Stream Valley – Liberty Bell Trail project on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of White Oaks Elementary School, 6130 Shiplett Boulevard, in Burke.

As part of this project, the Park Authority is planning:

  • The construction of a new pedestrian and bicycle asphalt trail within Pohick Stream Valley Park, running parallel to Pohick Creek;
  • A bridge across Pohick Creek at the end of the existing trail from Hatches Court;
  • A trail connection to Burke Road with connections to the existing sidewalks;
  • Trailside interpretive signage for the adjacent Silas Burke Mill site.

The new trail will connect to existing trails and sidewalks in the stream valley, creating a continuous trail network in the area suitable for use by a variety of trail users. This trail will also significantly improve pedestrian access to local shopping centers and the Burke Centre and Rolling Road VRE Stations.

The first section between Burke Lake Road and the Burke VRE station is under construction. The second section from Burke Lake Road the Rolling Road VRE Station is in the planning stages.

Public support for this project is important as it demonstrates community interest in walking and cycling as recreation and transportation options in our area. Come out and support one of the best new projects we have had come our way in some time.
