Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
"Hey, can you play some chords I can solo over?" The guitarist asks the other guitarist. "Yeah, I made this up a while ago. Check it out." And there you go, collaboration. It's the essence of what ties one instrument to the other. It's what ultimately creates a riff, song or symphony. How do you find musicians to collaborate with in your local town? This week, I'm placing a spotlight on the subject of collaboration and how Burke musicians can better locate each other. Craigslist - Let's pretend you're a guitar player that loves the blues. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix, The Who all have had a …
Singer Nancy Scimone could be one of this area's most talented jazz musicians. I say this with perspective gained from experience about this musician that works day and night polishing her craft. I sat down with Nancy and had a great time learning about her. Darien Novillo: Hi Nancy, It's a pleasure to get a chance to interview you and hope to get a better perspective on a jazz vocalist that has a true passion for jazz. How do you find time to polish your craft while working?  Nancy Scimone: Because I work out of our house, my commute to the piano is quite quick!  All of my work is music …
Are you renting or buying an instrument for your kids this school year? Burke's Music and Arts is the place to go. There's a multitude of instruments, music books and most at decent prices. I stopped by there to pick up guitar strings this week. I wanted to see how busy they've been since the new school year started. It's been a long time since I walked into the Music and Arts store. The new electric guitars still decorate the walls alongside acoustic basses and guitars. As soon as you step in, the electric drum set is set out and ready for anyone to sit on the throne and try out a beat. When…
The music at Burke Centre Festival proved to be a good mix of acoustic pop, indie and rock.
It's easy to listen to, relaxing and thought provoking. Jazz is its own breed in the music world. The musicians that play this hybrid of musical styles have to be proficient in hearing every note and beat. We have a jazz band here in Burke who does just that, called The Big Enough Band. These 5 members collaborate to fuse together a sound most musicians can't reach. The band is led by prolific jazz guitarist Allan Harrington. The Big Enough Band plays most of Harrington's songs from his eight released CDs, along with various Jazz Standards. Other members of the band include singers Myriet Jno…
They practice right in our backyard and make sure every note hits with abundant precision. Burke holds some gems that we unintentionally ignore, but I'm here to shed some light on local musicians that could make you feel like we lived on the other side of the country. "Don't you want somebody to love? Don't you need somebody to love?" Yes, it's Jefferson Airplane. Some folks in Burke don't just remember these songs and times, but relive them through their own uninhibited talent. I introduce to you… The New Dominion Band: a 5-piece group of lovers of the '60s, '70s and '80s. Though they got …
