Happy Wednesday, Burke! Here are a few things going on in and around Burke for Aug. 21.

  1. $3.1 million federal grant awarded to the Fairfax County Fire Department will allow the department to hire 19 new firefighters.
  2. Burke United Methodist Preschool still has openings available for any parents still searching for a preschool. You can read more here on the Burke Patch community boards.
  3. Have you seen Milo? A Wheaten Terrier named Milo has gone missing. This missing dog announcement was posted to the Burke Patch boards yesterday.
  4. Capt. Jerome Williams of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department accepted the torch for the upcoming World Police and Fire Games to officially transfer the 2015 games to Fairfax County. 
  5. Have a passion for writing? There will be a "Writers' Roundtable" for adults at Pohick Regional Library today from 7-9 p.m. in the Pohick Conference Room.
