2013 Fairfax Bike Summit - Transforming our Community

Have you heard that quickest, least expensive way to transform our community into a more liveable, sustainable, and active community is through bicycling?  On November 2, the second Fairfax Bike Summit will be held at George Mason University to advance our collective understanding and knowledge of what we can accomplish together in our community by focusing on bicycling as a transportation mode. We have learned that communities that focus on bicycling infrastructure to make short trips possible by bike, experience many benefits.

This years summit is focused on Tysons, the County's master project to make Tysons into a walkable, bicycle friendly, community of the future. What we learn from this effort about safety, infrastructure, business opportunities, connectivity, community health, and environmental friendly transportation in Tysons will become lessons for our county. Register online.

Many other topics will be discussed at the summit, such as the importance of allowing children the opportunity to take trips by bike. There will be a presentation on the statewide Safe Routes to School program, on ways to encourage kids to bike, bike safety, women and cycling, and many more.

The summit is a great opportunity to meet community leaders, fellow cyclists, and representatives from bike organizations and bike shops. Several local shops will have bike gear to check out. The Fairfax County bike coordinator will be discussing the recently completed Tysons and Fairfax County bicycle master plans.

Jeff Olson of Alta Planning + Design, author of The Third Mode: Towards a Green Society, will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers include Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists and author of Smart Cycling: Promoting Safety, Fun, Fitness, and the Environment, Bill Nesper who directs the Bicycle Friendly America program at the League of American Bicyclists, Robert Thomson (Dr Gridlock), and representatives from WABA, WMATA, Fairfax County DOT, VDOT, and several other organizations/companies.

Come, on November 2, be part of this exciting transition to a healthier, greener, fun future!
