Burke-Springfield Bike Master Plan Meeting Jan. 24

Your input is needed at the Fairfax County Bike Master Plan Open House on Tuesday, Jan 24.  The meeting will be held from 5:30 to - 8:00 p.m., at the Springfield District Office, 6140 Rolling Road Springfield, VA, 22152.

The Bike Master Plan process is underway.  Fairfax County is conducting it's first ever countywide planning exercise that focuses specifically on bicycling as transportation. The County recognizes that it must provide for multiple modes of transportation as the county grows. “The goal... will be to identify specific improvements that are needed to accommodate and encourage bicycling within and between activity and population centers throughout Fairfax County, as well as to adjacent jurisdictions.” Read more at the project website to include the open house flyer.

The objectives to be addressed in this plan include:

• Encouraging healthy lifestyles and physical activity through daily commutes;
• Enhanced recreational opportunities;
• Increased conservation of energy resources;
• Congestion mitigation and emission reduction;
• Improved mobility for all transportation system users;
• Conversion of short (less than three miles) single-occupancy vehicle trips to bicycle trips.

There are limited ways to improve our current underfunded transportation infrastructure. We can’t maintain what we have. We must allow for additional transportation alternatives, which include bicycles.  Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling (FABB) has been working hard to make bicycling infrastructure a county priority, we see this as the best opportunity for years to come to get this right.
