UPDATE: NWS Issues Flash Flood Warning for Northern Virginia

Flash Flood Warning in effect until 10:15 a.m.

UPDATE Friday 8:50 a.m.: Most of Northern Virginia is under a Flash Flood Warning until 10:15 a.m.

Locations include Alexandria, Annandale, Arlington, Ballston, Belle Haven, Burke, Franconia, Oakton, Springfield, Tysons Corner and Vienna.

Cameron Run and Four Mile Run have reached their peak levels and will be falling through the morning, according to the NWS.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Warning at 5:30 a.m. that will stay in effect until 11 a.m. for the City of Alexandria, Fairfax County, the City of Falls Church and Arlington County.

In Fairfax County, it's mainly for the central region and in Arlington it's mainly for the western area.

NWS Doppler radar shows the area has seen between 2 to 4 inches of rain across the area, with an additional inch of rain expected.

Creeks and streams will continue to rise out of their banks, the NWS warns.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. 

NWS warns the following streams could run over their banks:

  • OCCOQUAN RIVER
  • NEABSCO CREEK
  • CHOPAWAMSIC CREEK

  • SOUTH FORK QUANTICO CREEK
  • POWELLS CREEK
  • ACCOTINK CREEK
  • SOUTH FORK LITTLE DIFFICULT RUN
  • FLATLICK BRANCH
  • BIG ROCKY RUN
  • SMILAX BRANCH
  • HORSEPEN RUN
  • LITTLE ROCKY RUN
  • POPES HEAD CREEK
  • CASTLE CREEK
  • RABBIT BRANCH
  • SIDEBURN BRANCH
  • MARUMSCO CREEK
  • GILES RUN
  • MIDDLE RUN
  • SOUTH RUN

The NWS warns not to drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is enough to sweep vehicles off the road.
