Potomac River Running Hosts Memorial Run, Raises Funds for The One Fund Boston

Runners from Burke and Fairfax County participated in the run to honor the victims and heroes of the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Around 400 runners from the Burke area and Fairfax County joined Potomac River Running Sunday for a Marathon Monday Memorial Run at Burke Lake Park.

The goal of the run was to honor the victims and heroes of the bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15, according to a press release.

“We were amazed and inspired to see the immediate and heartfelt response to our call for support. In my mind, events like these reinforce the inherent kindness and compassion in the people of our community,” said Brendan Shaprio, co-owner of Potomac River Running, in the release.

The event was free but runners could purchase “Runners for Boston” T-shirts for $20, with proceeds donated to The One Fund Boston, set up to help the families affected by the bombing attack. Runners raised $6,500 for the One Fund Boston, the release states.

Before heading out on the 4.75-mile trail, runners participated in a moment of reflection for the victims. Participants wore blue and yellow memorial ribbons as they walked or ran the trail and also signed their names to a banner that read “=PR= loves Boston.”
