VRE riders are invited to bring a new unwrapped toy with them on the train during the Wednesday's morning commute and leave it on their seat as they detrain.

VRE will collect the toys at the end of each run.  "Conductors will also collect checks and cash from those who would prefer to let someone else do the shopping," a VRE press release said.  Checks should be made payable to: Toys for Tots.

Donations will also be collected Saturday, Dec. 14, at that day's Santa Train stations. Those are Burke Centre, Fredericksburg, Woodbridge, and Manassas.

"We have participated in the Toys for Tots program for 17 years," VRE said. "It's been incredibly gratifying to know that our riders have helped so many families share in the fun tradition of opening new gifts during the holiday season.  Together we can make a difference."
