Traffic Alert: Fuel Spill Backs Up Interstate 95 South for Miles

Ramp from westbound I-495 temporarily closes as cleanup continue; traffic diverted.

A tractor trailer accident is causing major delays on Interstate 95 south in Springfield Thursday afternoon and has temporarily closed the exit 170C ramp.

A tractor trailer struck a piece of metal on the roadway just before 12 p.m. The metal pierced the fuel tank, causing fuel to leak onto the road, according to Corinne Geller, public relations director for Virginia State Police.

Virginia State Police are on scene and redirecting traffic to the HOV lanes. As of 2:49 p.m., southbound I-95 traffic was backed up for about seven miles.

Motorists are advised to use another route until the ramp is reopened.
