Burke, Springfield Black Friday Store Hours

Walmart and K-Mart are open on Thanksgiving; other stores open very early Friday.

Fairfax County Police and the Office of Consumer Affairs offered security tips for Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping in a live online chat and corresponding video (attached), as shoppers prepare to begin the Holiday retail season.

and K-Mart in Springfield are open Thanksgiving Day.  Other area department stores are scheduled to open in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Open Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, 6 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Open 24 hours, including Thanksgiving.  Black Friday sales begin at 10 p.m.

TheBlackFriday.com recommends preparation can go a long way in making the experience successful.

  • Decide what you want in advance, because you won't be able to cover all stores.
  • Give preference to the big ticket items, because on these you'll save more.
  • Buy only what you need so you don't end up paying a restocking fee.
  • Avoid traffic congestion by parking away from the store and walking. 

Up to 152 million shoppers are expected to visit stores and websites during Black Friday Weekend, according to the National Retail Federation.

The day after Thanksgiving was first coined Black Friday in reference to businesses recording their losses in red, their gains in black.  The weekend now includes Small Business Saturday® and Cyber Monday.

The security tips are about credit card and identify theft, and apply to shopping at all times.
