Cardinal Plaza Shell Helps Military Families

Whether donating a cent per gallon at the pump or tossing your spare change, owner Scott Brown works to help wounded warriors and their families.

Have you seen the signs collecting money for charity out at Cardinal Plaza Shell at Old Keene Mill and Rolling Road? Station owner Scott Brown works to raise money for Fisher House every May in honor of Memorial Day,  donating one cent per gallon pumped at the station. This May, over $3,500 was raised.

During the year, Brown supports other charities such as , a Nativity Church run organization that helps build villages and other support systems in Haiti. Cardinal Plaza Shell has also supported Stop Hunger Now and the West Springfield Little League. In addition, area organizations often hold fund-raising car wash weekends where the group can raise $500-$2000. Brown provides the water and makes sure there are safe areas for the car washers.

47-year-old Brown, a West Springfield native who graduated from West Springfield High School, took over the station from his father in 1986, who had  owned the station since 1968.

In the early years, Brown recalled, the Shell Dealers all raised money for various charities. When he took over the station, he saw a need to continue which led him to  seek recommendations from  his customers, many of whom were in the military. He also did his own research before deciding to support Fisher House.

"Fisher House is the single best military charity in existence," said Brown, citing that 97 percent of donations go directly to help the military and their families. "The amount of caring and love they give these injured troops and their families in their time of need is just amazing and worthy of respect and support."

Cardinal Plaza Shell has won awards for the changing landscaping and seasonal decor around the station. Brown also has been recognized for his fundraising for several organizations.

Brown has extended the" one cent a gallon" for Fisher House another week in hopes that the community will continue to learn about and support Fisher House. Brochures and donation envelopes are available in the Cardinal Plaza Shell office. Brown sends emails to his customers about Fisher House and plans to add information to his website about all the charities the station supports.

A weekend manager at the store was proud of his employer's charity efforts.

"My dad's a veteran and it makes me feel good that Mr. Brown is doing something for the military," Andy DeRosa said. "It shows a little bit of appreciation and respect."
