When Will Burke's Caribou Coffee Convert to Peet's Coffee & Tea?

The coffee chain announced plans last year to close 80 locations nationwide and convert others to Peet's coffee shops.

The Caribou Coffee shop in the Kings Park Shopping Center likely won't be a Caribou Coffee location for much longer.

An employee at the store confirmed to Patch that the coffee shop, located at 8948 Burke Lake Rd., is still one of the 88 Caribou stores to convert to a Peet's Coffee & Tea location sometime this year.

Caribou Coffee announced plans last May to close about 80 of its underperforming shops across the country and convert another 88 shops to Peet's as part of a new business strategy.

A statement from Caribou CEO Mike Tattersfield indicated that the conversions would happen "over the next 12 to 18 months," but no official list of the locations was released.

After the announcement, an employee at the Kings Park location initially predicted the conversion would happen in October, but residents have not noticed any changes since then.

Now an employee at Caribou said the Kings Park Caribou Coffee location could become a Peet's sometime in spring. The store would only have about a week's notice to let customers know about the change.

Calls and emails to Caribou Coffee management by Patch were not returned at the time of publication.

The coffee company also hasn't released any official information about the changes since last year. It's unclear how the conversion will affect the Caribou Perks loyalty program, which some customers have complained about on the Caribou Coffee Facebook page.

Tell us, Burke: Will you miss Caribou Coffee when it becomes a Peet's Coffee & Tea? Have you tried Peet's before?

I'm a Reston resident and I have a standing order for Peets tea online. I don't know if it will be worth going to Burke for, but I can recommend it (although I am starting to prefer Teavana). I don't like coffee, so I can't speak to that.

Thanks for your comment, Alice! Nice to hear from someone familiar with Peet's. As a regular Teavana customer, I'm definitely curious to see what Peet's will have to offer for us tea-oriented folks.

Big fan of Peet's, can't wait for the store in Ashburn to switch over.

The Caribou on HWY 100 and Bluemound is making the switch. Frankly it's a tragedy, a travesty, and a tapestry! But then again... whatever.

I LOVE PEETS!!!! People out here may not know all this but Peet's has been an institution since 1966. It is by far the best coffee shop I have ever been to and, as a person who was initially only a tea drinker, the only place for a long time that had decent tea and understood that tea meant more than "Lipton". Peet's predates Starbucks and when Starbucks first started, they used to get their coffee from Peet's. Caribou, on the other hand, has NO decent black tea at all since they go rid of their Irish Breakfast tea. Very condescending to tea drinkers - some of us like a robust cup of tea and not just the Americanized Fruity Water they insist on serving as tea. Can't wait til Caribou is gone. I am SUPER EXCITED for PEETS! Trust me, Burke will love it
