Burke Girl Scouts Celebrate 100th Anniversary

Two Cadets planned the local celebration honoring the national anniversary.

Girl Scouts representing Burke's Service Unit 52-7 sponsored a birthday celebration Saturday to honor the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). Visitors were treated to demonstrations, crafts, exhibits and birthday cake at .

Cailin Grant and Jasmine Chong, members of Cadet Troop 1665, planned and organized the celebration as their Silver Project.

Service Unit 52-7 is comprised of girls from , , and , , Sangster, and Elementary Schools.

GSUSA declared 2012 "The Year of the Girl" in recognition of the organization's centennial.  The , declaring March 2012 through March 2013 the "Year of the Girl" in Burke.

Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts in 1912, after meeting Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.  GSUSA reports there are currently 3.2 million Girl Scouts -- 2.3 million girl members and 890,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers.

The grade-levels in Girl Scouts are:

  • Girl Scout Daisy, grades K - 1
  • Girl Scout Brownie, grades 2 - 3
  • Girl Scout Junior, grades 4 - 5
  • Girl Scout Cadette, grades 6 - 8
  • Girl Scout Senior, grades 9 - 10
  • Girl Scout Ambassador, grades 11 - 12
