What to do in the area this weekend.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this President’s Day weekend. Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your “done-work-outta-here time”. Check our top picks and activities for this weekend.

1. Virginia Opera: The Valkyrie

Where/When: Center for the Arts at George Mason University, 4400 University Drive, Fairfax /Friday Feb. 18 at 8 p.m.

Why Go: This opera  is based on Norse and Teutonic myths, a powerful god is torn between conflicting loyalties among his mortal and divine children in his desire to possess a magical ring that will make him omnipotent. Audiences will enjoy listening to Wagner’s magnificent score including famous piece “Ride of the Valkyries”.

2. Outerloop Presents: Freqontrol

Where/When: Jaxx Nightclub - 6355 Rolling Road, Springfield/Friday Feb. 18th - Doors open at 5 p.m.

Why Go: Enjoy a night of Alternative Punk music with Freqontrol. Scatterpoint and Walking the Monolith will also be performing. This is an All Ages show.

Pricing: $10 in advance, $12 day of show

 

3. Mardi Gras Ball

Where/When: 9001 Arlington Blvd, Fairfax/Saturday Feb. 19th from 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m.

Why Go: The Krewe of Kena are throwing their first Mardi Gras Ball. There will be a prize for the best costume but you are not required to dress up.

4. Hot Tuna

Where/When: Center for the Arts at George Mason University, 4400 University Drive, Fairfax /Saturday Feb. 19 at 8 p.m.

Why Go: In 1969 the members of Jefferson Airplane formed an American blues-rock band known as Hot Tuna. Don’t miss your chance to see them perform acoustic and electric versions of original and traditional blues songs.

5. George Washington’s 279th Birthday Celebration

Where/When: Mount Vernon- 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Mount Vernon/Monday Feb. 21 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.  

Why Go: In honor of George Washington’s Birthday admission to Mount Vernon is Free on Monday February 21st only. There will be a wreath laying ceremony at 10 a.m. and a surprise party reminiscent of his party in 1778 at 1:30 p.m.
