Worries about Hurricane Earl kept you from going to the beach this weekend? Don't fear! There are plenty of Labor Day celebratory options in the local area around Burke.

St. Mary's 135th Annual Labor Day Picnic
Monday, Sept. 6- Opening Ceremony 10:20 a.m., Mass & Blessing of the Tools - 10:30 a.m., Festivities Immediately After Mass until 5 p.m.

Historical church St. Mary's of Sorrows will be holding their 135th Annual Labor Day Picnic, the oldest outdoor social in Fairfax County. The picnic will feature dancing to The 20 piece Swing Band Dance Machine from 2 to 4 p.m. St. Mary's famous secret recipe Barbecue Chicken will be served, along with bratwurst, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and ice cream. You can also purchase home baked items and home-canned preserves from the Country Store. Local crafters will be displaying their wares and volunteers will be talking about the history of the church. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase throughout the day, with prizes including an Apple iPad, a Canon Digital Camera, and an iPod Nano. Please do not bring your dogs.

Clifton Labor Day Car Show
Monday, Sept. 6
9 a.m. - 3 p.m. - Free to Attend
"On the Streets" in Historic Clifton

The 11th Annual Clifton Labor Day Car Show in Historic Clifton features a variety of muscle cars, antiques, classics, motorcycles and more. Door Prizes, food and music will also be available.
This open show will benefit local charities with its proceeds. Dash Plaques will be given to the first 250 show vehicles registered. Registration at the gate costs $15.

Herndon Labor Day Jazz and Wine Festival
Monday, Sept. 6 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. - $8 - Designated Driver ticket, $15 - Unlimited Wine Drinking and Commemorative Glass, $15 - Micro-Brew Tasting with 5 Tasting Tickets and Commemorative Glass, $1 - Additional Beer Tasting Tickets, 12 and under - free

The festival will feature performances by Andrew McKnight and Beyond Borders, The Mary Ann Redmond Band, The Caleb Hawley Trio and "Bruce in the USA" - a Musical History of Bruce Springsteen and the E. Street Band. A dozen Virginia wineries, including Loudoun Valley Vineyards and Well Hung Vineyard, will be giving tastings. Local artists wil also have various work and crafts on sale. A gourmet food court is featured.

Open Mic Showcase hosted by Ron Goad

The well-known music venue Jammin Java will be holding what's been declared the "Open Mic Night in the DC Area" by the Washington Post. Host Ron Goad leads it up. As Jammin' Java's Open Mic Showcases are scheduled weeks in advance, don't expect to get to play yourself, but get settled for a night of great local music.
