Firefighter of the Year
Burke resident Robert Upchurch, master technician with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, was honored as at a July 18 ceremony.

Third Derecho Related Death
Dylan Shawn Cooper, 19, of Falls Church . He was found unconscious June 29, in the vicinity of downed power lines on Haycock Road. Burke resident Khiet Nguyen, 27, and a 90-year-old Springfield woman died during the June 29 storm, when trees fell on their car and home, respectively.

Woodlawn Stables Owner Succumbs to Cancer
following a battle with cancer. Mitchell co-owned Woodlawn Stables with her daughter, Cindy. as a great teacher who was passionate about horses and her business.

TJ Application Process Under Review
The Fairfax County School Board discussed for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology before a packed house Thursday night. At issue are declining math scores among TJ students, and lack of ethnic diversity at the school.

Looking Ahead: Child Care Provider and Parents' Town Hall Meeting
Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity is sponsoring a meeting Monday night to handed down by the Virginia Department of Social Services, as well as new regulations being created by Fairfax County. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Board Auditorium of the Fairfax County Government Center. 

Board Chairman Sharon Bulova addressed the issues .
