Patch Picks: Celebrating Cinco De Mayo

Will there be feasting, dancing or tequila in your future?

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Given the nature of the holiday, you might expect it to be celebrated mainly in Mexico. But, similarly to Saint Patrick's Day to the non-Irish, Cinco de Mayo is also popular in America. We made a list of ways that you can join the celebration! So get ready to party!

1. Jam Session

Music is a big part of Mexican culture, and a fun way to celebrate the holiday. Every year, the Mexican community on the Cayman Islands holds an air-guitar competition. Grab some friends (and maybe a few beverages), and host your own air rock show! Don't be afraid of looking a little silly, and turn the music up!

  2. Crafts

Why not make yourself a pinata? All you need is some papier-mache and a balloon to wrap it around! Fill it with candy or other goodies, and enjoy taking turns with the bat! You could also make your own Maracas and shake away! Visit your local craft store and get creative.

3. Dance

Going along with the music theme in our first idea, why not have a little dance party? Put on some Tejano / Texmex or Mexican cumbia, and start dancing! Invite your neighbors and make it a block party. It's fun and will burn some calories for sure! If you want to really get into it, you can even look up instructional dance videos online.

4. Cocktail Hour

Why not dedicate part of your day to trying out some different cocktails, all including tequila? Tequila is made from the blue agave plant, which is found mostly in Mexico. You could try a classic margarita, or try using different flavors. A tequila sunrise would also be the perfect Cinco de Mayo drink. Have some friends over to taste your different concoctions, and please drink responsibly.

5. Make a Feast

Food is an important part of Mexican culture, so what better day to make a Mexican feast than May 5? There are all sorts of different cultural dishes you can try. Mole poblano, tamales, fajitas, and flan are all great traditional foods to make. For all your recipe needs, allrecipes.com is a great one-stop site.   What are you waiting for? Get the party started! (And be sure to invite me!)
