Take a Sales Tax Holiday

Energy-efficient household appliances are tax-exempt through Monday

Virginia's fourth annual Energy Star and WaterSense products sales tax holiday begins today and runs through Monday. Residents can purchase a variety of "green" appliances that qualify for energy savings by the federal government.

"We all need to do our part to use energy more wisely and conserve our natural resources," Governor Bob McDonnell said about the weekend. "...Buying energy-efficient applicances is a smart investment, saving consumers money on their utility bills and conserving energy."

To be included in the sales tax holiday, items must be $2,500 or less and must be intended for noncommercial or personal use. Energy Star products include large products such as refrigerators, ceiling fans, washing machines, air conditioners and dishwashers. Smaller items such as compact flourescent light bulbs and programmable thermostats are also included. WaterSense items including toilets, bathroom sink faucets, faucet accessories and showerheads will also be tax-exempt. Used Energy Star and WaterSense products also get the exemption.
