Many residents saw long lines at the polls early in the morning, but the lines moved quickly, according to election officials at local precincts.

At Precinct 118 Lake Braddock at Lake Braddock Secondary School (LBSS), located at 9200 Burke Lake Rd., Chief Election Officer Michael Duerksen said voter turnout was about as "steady" as expected. Around 242 registered residents had voted as of 7:57 a.m.

The precinct experienced a glitch that slowed down voters when the optical scanner in the scannable ballot box malfunctioned, but Duerksen said an election official was able to resolve the issue in under 15 minutes. Duerksen predicted the precinct would see between 14-18 percent voter turnout by the end of the day.

Several Burke precincts reported having more than 1,000 registered voters checked in by 3:30 p.m. Chief Election Officer David Young at precinct 127 Burke Centre in the Commons Community Center, located at 5701 Roberts Pkwy., said voter turnout was predictable throughout the day. The precinct reported more than 28 percent of residents had voted by 4 p.m., or about 1,337 voters.

Similar to precinct 118, Young said Burke Centre experienced equipment issues with the optical scanner in their electronic ballot box. The glitch was repaired "pretty swiftly," said Young, and the precinct didn't see any other issues for the rest of the day as a steady stream of voters trickled in every hour.

Precinct 801 Burke at West Springfield High School in Springfield counted 1,242 ballots cast as of 3:41 p.m. An election officer predicted the precinct would easily exceed 30 percent of registered voters counted before 5 p.m. and that the evening rush of voters would put the precinct closer to 40 or 50 percent.
