Burke Historical Society meeting

Please join us at our general meeting, 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 24th.  We will meet in the Fellowship Hall at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, 6304 Lee Chapel Road, Burke, VA 22015.  Linda Lau, BHS Treasurer, will give a presentation entitled, “A Celebration of Thanksgiving.”

Thanksgiving this year falls on November 28th, a day sure to include family gatherings, special foods, and reflections on good fortune.  But how did this observance and its customs come to be as they are?  Join us to find out, as Linda Lau tells the story of Thanksgiving Day, with special emphasis on Sarah Josepha Hale and her role in Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation making Thanksgiving a national holiday.

Linda Lau is a member of the Burke Historical Society, the Victorian Society at Falls Church, and The Questers (an international organization devoted to antiques and historic preservation).  Linda has a love of history, historic preservation, and antiques, with the Victorian era being a special favorite.  She especially likes researching the Victorian lifestyle (etiquette, recipes, decorating, etc.), and enjoys sharing her research with interested groups.  She is the author of Nippon Dolls and Playthings, and she served as the primary researcher and author of the Victorian Society’s book Victorian Falls Church (published by Arcadia Publishing) and a cookbook, Afternoon Tea in the Victorian Tradition.

The Burke Historical Society is a group of local enthusiasts interested in exploring and preserving the history of Burke.  We are seeking new members who share this interest.  No commitment is needed; all are welcome!
