Something Close to Our Hearts

CASA Volunteers Patti and Ed Rager reflect on what is important to them and the true meaning of giving.

Patti and Ed Rager have served as CASA volunteers since February 2007. The couple has collectively advocated for the best interests of abused and neglected children on three cases, helping a total of 10 children to find safe and permanent homes.

As we enter the holiday season, Patti and Ed have chosen to share this special message about what is important to them and the true meaning of giving.

This time of year, while it is so easy to get caught up in “things” and the holiday rush, it is also important to reflect on what is real, enduring, and close to the hearts of all of us who serve as CASA volunteers

As CASA volunteers for almost six years, we believe that being a CASA is the most empowering of all volunteer experiences; we feel privileged to be given the opportunity to ensure the safety and well-being of the children in our community.  CASA volunteers are people with big hearts who step up--and speak up--for children, enriching their own lives by doing so.   As you all know, successfully advocating for children takes a strong commitment, hard work, perseverance, and many hours.   We are among the Fairfax CASA volunteers who spent 23,527 hours last year working towards the goal of ensuring that 453 children were placed in safe, permanent homes.   We feel honored to belong to this elite cadre of caring citizens.

Looking back on our experience as CASAs, we are well aware that our successes could not have been achieved without the support, guidance, and expertise of the dedicated CASA staff.  Along with us, they work hard to ensure that Fairfax CASA remains a strong, respected, and successful community resource.  The high standards they set for the organization, themselves, and we volunteers are reflected in the positive way Fairfax CASA is perceived by both the professionals we work with and the community at large.

It is clear that maintaining a successful CASA program that continues to address the needs of the children in our community requires the help of the community itself. Please consider making the gift of time as a CASA volunteer, or help ensure the future of our program with tax deductible financial support. No matter how you give, please know that your generosity is greatly appreciated by all of us within the CASA family.
