Lake Braddock Students Start Collection Drive for Typhoon Haiyan Victims

A group of students with the Do Something Club are collecting clothes, toothbrushes, baby food and more to send to the Philippines. The drive ends on Wednesday.

A student-run club at Lake Braddock Secondary School (LBSS) is collecting donations to send to victims of Typhoon Haiyan (also know as Yolanda) in the Philippines.

The Do Something club, which is dedicated to making a difference and giving back to the community, has partnered with local community agency Caregivers Home Health Services to send 10 boxes of items to 10 families who were impacted by the typhoon on Nov. 10.

The death toll from the typhoon, which has been called one of the deadliest natural disasters to hit Asia in decades, passed more than 5,200 last week, according to CNN.

The club's collection drive began last Tuesday and ends on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

"It's amazing how things have just fallen together and it's the support from the community that's so awesome," said Nirali Shah, president of the LBSS Do Something club.

Shah said the club initially wanted to raise money for relief efforts, but were disappointed in how long the approval process to start a fundraiser would take. When the club learned about the opportunity to do a collection drive, Shah said they enthusiastically signed on.

CareGivers has already identified the 10 families who will receive the supplies, Shah said, and the club is collecting the following items during the drive: backpacks, first aid kids, vitamins, shampoo, candles, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, batteries, blankets, feminine hygiene products, food, canned goods, granola bars, baby food and formula, bottled water, disposable utensils, and any and all clothing so long as it's washed beforehand.

Residents who plan to donate items in bulk should email Shah at niralishah130@gmail.com in advance before dropping anything off at the school so the students can ensure the items are sent with the other donations. Smaller donations can be dropped off at LBSS, located at 9200 Burke Lake Rd., in the main office.
