Greenspring Couple Brings the Gift of Teaching to Students in Asia

After they retired in 2000, Greenspring residents Drs. Clint and Vickie Lambert have spent much of their "free time" traveling to countries throughout Asia to teach nursing students.

For 11 years, Drs. Clint and Vickie Lambert have traveled abroad to teach nursing students

SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA – After they retired in 2000, Drs. Clint and Vickie Lambert have spent much of their “free time” traveling to countries throughout Asia to teach nursing students.  Dr. Clint Lambert is a psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist and former President of Lambert Counseling Services in Georgia.  Dr. Vickie Lambert is a nurse educator and a former Dean and Professor Emerita of the Georgia Health Sciences University, College of Nursing.   After a colleague informed them of an opportunity to teach in Japan, the Lambert’s packed up four suitcases and moved to Ube, Japan.  There, they taught undergraduate nursing students in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Yamaguchi University Faculty of Medicine from 2001-2003.

The Lambert’s moved back to the U.S. in 2003, but did not stop traveling to Asia.  For the next five years, they spent three month increments in Wuhan, China teaching masters and doctoral nursing students at Wuhan University.  Since 2007, the Lambert’s have spent three months each year teaching doctoral nursing students at Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai, Thailand.  Their next trip to Thailand is scheduled for July, when they will spend a month at Mahidol University in Bangkok, teaching doctoral nursing students and presenting a workshop on how to write scholarly publications.  Now preparing for this, their fifth trip to teach in Thailand, the Lambert’s still look forward to living with the people and learning the culture.  “The Thai’s are some of the most philanthropic, compassionate, caring people I’ve met,” said Clint.  “It’s been a wonderful experience for us.”

Between all of their trips abroad, the Lambert’s still find time to participate in several other activities.  At Greenspring retirement community, where they’ve lived since May 2008, the Lambert’s have become involved in several resident clubs including the yacht club, the archery club, a Wii bowling league, a chimes choir, and a resident leadership committee.  The Lambert’s also dedicate a couple of hours each day to editing the Pacific Rim International Journal of Nursing Research.  As co-editors of the journal, they are responsible for editing all the manuscripts submitted to the journal for publication.
