Greenspring’s Continuing Care Neighborhood Receives a Five-Star Rating from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

The Continuing Care neighborhood at Greenspring retirement community received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

(SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA) – The Continuing Care neighborhood at Greenspring retirement community received the highest score in the Five-Star Quality Rating System administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  The Erickson Living community, located in Springfield, Va., earned a 5-star rating in the Overall Quality category in August 2012.

According to the CMS website, the Five-Star Quality Rating System was created to help consumers, their families, and caregivers make an informed comparison among the nation’s 17,000 nursing homes that are certified by Medicare or Medicaid.  Each nursing home is assigned a ranking of 1 through 5 stars; the 5-star rating signifies a “much above average” level of care.

“We are so pleased to have received the maximum rating from CMS,” said Karen Boyce, director of Continuing Care at Greenspring.  “It provides wonderful feedback to the continuing care employees who aim to provide compassionate and supportive care to our residents each and every day.  The evaluation shows that our residents receive a high-level of care for both their physical and clinical needs,” said Boyce.

The Overall Quality rating is determined by performance in health inspections, quality of care measures, and nurse staffing.  Health inspection ratings include the last three years of onsite inspections, including standard surveys and complaint surveys.  Nurse staffing ratings are determined by the average number of hours of care given to each resident daily by nursing staff.  Quality of care ratings include information on nine different physical and clinical measures for residents.

Greenspring retirement community offers a full continuum of care with its 1405 independent living apartment-style homes, as well as with its Continuing Care neighborhood which offers 284 residences in assisted living, dedicated memory care, long-term nursing care, and short-term rehabilitation.
