Congressman Connolly Visits Greenspring, Helps to Honor Resident

(Springfield, VA)—On Wednesday, March 19, the Democratic Club of Greenspring hosted Rep. Gerry Connolly.  During his visit, Rep. Connolly addressed the 2014 election and the campaigns for the Congressional seats of the retiring Rep. Jim Moran and Rep. Frank Wolf.

“It’s going to be a big political year for us here in northern Virginia,” said Rep. Connolly.

He also addressed questions from the audience of nearly 100 residents. Topics ranged from current affairs in Russia and Crimea to defense budget cuts, the Affordable Care Act, comprehensive immigration reform, and entitlement program reform.

After the program, Rep. Connolly and members of the Democratic Club presented resident Loretta Nowakowski with a recognition plaque.  Nowakowski served as the President of the Democratic Club in 2011 and 2012, and also as a precinct captain at Greenspring for several years including during the 2012 Presidential election.  Greenspring first became a precinct in 2003 and has traditionally produced the highest percentage of voter turnout statewide.

The recognition plaque was signed by the Club’s founder, resident Ed Thurman, as well as past Club presidents including Michel Margosis (2005), Charles Bliss (2006), Don Giles (2007-2008), Bernice Berman (2009-2010), and Larry & Carolyn Leonard (2013).

A portion of the plaque states, “You have worked tirelessly to ensure that the activities of the Club have not only moved forward, but that they are enhanced by the improvements for which you are responsible….you emphasized the importance of getting out the vote, and you made it happen through your energetic persistence.”
