Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra brings "Woody, Buddy and Stan" to GMU's Center for the Arts
Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra performs "Woody, Buddy and Stan" at George Mason University's Center for the Arts on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m.
At each performance, Northern Virginia’s own jazz orchestra brings audiences jumping to their feet for enthusiastic ovations for its stunning interpretations of traditional jazz classics.
Under Artistic Director and alto sax virtuoso Jim Carroll, the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra takes the stage at Concert Hall on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at 8 p.m. for a fantastic program titled “Buddy, Woody and Stan.”
This special tribute concert celebrates the music of the great bandleaders Buddy Rich, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. This spectacular evening of music will showcase jazz standards performed by each of these jazz masters’ big bands, including Buddy Rich’s interpretations of “Love For Sale” and “West Side Story Medley,” Woody Herman’s interpretations of “Four Brothers” and “Caldonia” and Stan Kenton’s interpretations of “Intermission Riff” and “Long Ago and Far Away,” among others.

The band, which is composed of talented musicians hailing from the greater Washington, D.C., area, will feature stellar saxophonists Charlie Young, Marty Nau and Lois Hernandez; an all-star rhythm section with Grammy Award winner Joe McCarthy on drums, Rick Whitehead on guitar and Wade Beach on piano; and a superb brass section with Liesl Whitaker on lead trumpet, Kenny Rittenhouse on jazz trumpet, and Ben Patterson and Matt Niess on trombone.
Jim Carroll’s illustrious career includes performances at Carnegie Hall, the White House, the Kennedy Center, Royal Albert Hall and the Apollo Theatre. A versatile performer, Carroll has performed with Michael Jackson, Nancy Wilson, Maynard Ferguson, Billy Taylor, Woody Herman and His Thundering Herd, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and many others. Active as an educator, Carroll is the director of Jazz Studies at George Mason University.
