Farmers' Market Comes to Central Springfield

Central Springfield farmers' market will be open Saturdays 10:00am to 2:00pm beginning this spring.

The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is working with Smart Markets, Inc. to bring a farmers' market to Central Springfield. The market will be held at American Legion Post 176.

Smart Markets was established to provide well-managed, guaranteed producer-only farmers' markets in Northern Virginia.

When operated with vision, commitment and enthusiasm, farmers' markets can bring together a diverse population around a shared objective: supporting families by buying and serving real food — with real flavor.

When you shop at a farmers' market, you are supporting local farmers, preserving small farms, and promoting sustainable agriculture. You are buying real food that is actually healthy for you, your family, the economy, and the environment, both locally and globally.

Smart Markets provides a model of cultural outreach, offers nutrition and cooking education, and encourages activism on issues of environmental protection and community development within the nurturing spirit of vibrant and bustling markets.

Smart Markets welcomes you to become more than just buyers — join them in celebration of the good life, good times, good feelings and good food. They invite you to grow and prosper with them and to have fun doing it.

Smart Markets, Inc. was founded in early 2008 by Jean Janssen, a longtime activist and entrepreneur in Northern Virginia and a twenty-five year resident of Fairfax County. Smart Markets represents the confluence of her lifelong interests in food, nutrition and cooking and her passion for community outreach and activism. Jean’s expectations for Smart Markets reflect her diverse experience and organizational expertise.

The Central Springfield farmers' market will be open Saturdays 10:00am to 2:00pm beginning this spring. The American Legion is located at 6520 Amherst Avenue next to Springfield Toyota. For more information visit Smart Markets at www.smartmarkets.org.
