Over the summer a group of young professionals from Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce member companies approached our Marketing Committee about developing a program to target the younger generation workforce. An initial brainstorming meeting was held in August. Following that team-meeting the Chamber tasked Mike McGurk of Transurban and Meghan Snyder, Meghan Snyder Communications, with planning an inaugural event.
The Young Professionals Network (YPN) was officially founded this fall and held its first event Oct. 9, sponsored by Fireside Grill in Lorton Station Town Center. Thirty-two young professionals attended for the peer to peer networking, and to learn more about the group’s goals and future events. At the event iPads were used to collect information from attendees regarding what types of events and benefits they would like see from the YPN. The overall feedback was very positive, and many attendees said they look forward to getting more involved.
YPN will serve as a forum for young professionals, ages 22 through 39, to network with other young professionals and become more actively engaged in the Chamber. It will provide added benefits to existing Chamber member companies by offering new events designed to appeal to younger employees.
YPN will provide young professionals with opportunities to educate themselves and the business community about issues important to them.
Additionally, YPN hopes to groom young professionals for future leadership roles in the Chamber.
Activities within YPN may include networking, professional development, community involvement, social activities and more.
“The success of the group is dependent upon a consistently strong turnout and support from a growing young professional community. Our group should provide a unique forum for young professionals and support the Chamber’s existing goals. We must evolve into a complementing arm of the Chamber, not a standalone social club,” commented Mike McGurk, YPN chair.
