Win a $50 Gas Card from Patch

Enter our gas card giveaway today!

Update 9:40 p.m. May 21, 2012 - This contest is now closed. Thanks for participating. You can still add your comments if you have some great gas or money-saving tips, but only comments entered by 5 p.m. Monday, May 21 counted as entries for the give-away.  The winner has been notified via email.

------------

Gas prices are slowly coming down, but it's still pricey to fill up the tank. Nationwide, the average gas price is about $3.72, according to the Daily Fuel Gauge Report. Regular unleaded gas in the Burke area can be $3.80 or more.

Patch feels your pain and we want to help — even if it’s just a little bit. So we’re giving away a $50 gas card in the hopes that we can make one lucky reader's Memorial Day weekend excursion less expensive.

Entering this contest is easy. All you have to do is post a comment below this article to tell us about one thing you’re doing differently to save money on gas (or what you're doing to save on other things so you can afford gas). There’s no need to write a lot. Just a sentence or two will do!

We’ll conduct a random drawing from among the comments entered by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 21.

In the meantime, if you're looking for the cheapest gas (and road conditions) in the Annandale area, check out the Burke Patch commute page.

Good luck, road warriors!

I take metro to work at the Pentagon. I recommend Gas buddy.com to find the cheapest gas locally and when you travel.

I don't do anything differently, I get my gas at BJs, when I go to Woodbridge, at Shell using Giant points, or wherever I need to...
Megan May 15, 2012 at 09:43 pm
I use loyalty points offered at grocery stores to reduce the price per gallon often, and I try to walk whenever possible.
Corey Chernesky May 16, 2012 at 12:23 am
We are taking my husband's car, a Prius, everywhere on nights and weekends. Leaving my car, an SUV, in the garage is saving us tons of money.
J.J. May 16, 2012 at 09:29 am
If we need just a couple of things from the grocery store, I put on a backpack and ride my bike. Have gone several days without even starting the car!

I love these tips! Thanks, everyone! I have a Ford Fusion Hybrid, which helps cut back on gas costs, and we're lucky to live close enough to a grocery store to walk there. I'm also a huge fan of the Giant gas rewards points. Keep the tips coming and we'll crown a winner (by random selection) next week!
Also, remember this week is Bike to Work Week and national Bike to Work Day is Friday. Burke Patch will be hanging out at the VRE station's watering hole Friday morning, so come say hello! More info on Bike to Work Day is at http://patch.com/A-tp1Z. Beth Lawton, Regional Editor, Patch

I use an app called Gas Buddy on my cell phone to find the cheapest gas.
Holly Cook May 17, 2012 at 12:00 pm
We try to travel around town in my small car rather than use my husband's big car. I also get on aaa.com to find gas stations in my area with the least expensive gas.
Kathleen May 17, 2012 at 12:39 pm
I take my lunch with me to work so I don't have to go out and drive to find food at lunch time. We also use the Giant points at Shell.
Becky Chaklader May 17, 2012 at 12:43 pm
We try to plan our errands, and run them all at the same time. Also, we have a Shell card that gives a rebate as well as we are Giant Food shoppers and get that savings on top of the rebate. Every penny helps!

I only go out on a day that I can schedule a full day of errands, after I have mapped out the most mileage economically route. I also only purchase gas at the Express Stop on Old Keene Mill Road, but only if I am going past it. I don't go out of my way to save 18-20 cents a gallon on regular gas.
Kristen Snellings May 17, 2012 at 01:31 pm
I buy gas at places that offer a discount for cash.
Kate May 17, 2012 at 02:27 pm
I combine errands into fewer trips, stopping by stores on the way to/from work. And I use Giant points at Shell. I'm working on cleaning out my car; removing all the books I drive around with will make it lighter.
Greg Crider May 17, 2012 at 02:42 pm
I stay home and read Patch. When I do go out, I combine errands to reduce my trips. And whenever I'm in Woodbridge I make sure to fill 'er up.

I like this comment! Thanks for reading Patch.

I go to Express Stop in Burke for gas, it's the cheapest place I know of in the DMV area, and it's close to home!
Jennifer Southee May 17, 2012 at 03:47 pm
Oh yeah, and I only go to places that aren't nearby if I have to go to the area anyway (e.g. I only go to places that are near work if I'm going to work).
Michelle May 17, 2012 at 04:23 pm
I moved from Centreville to Burke so I'm closer to work now...closer commute, only four miles...:)
Patrick Soto May 17, 2012 at 04:48 pm
I usually buy my gas when I go to the commisary on Fort Belvior, it's usually 7-10 cents cheaper!
Burkegirl May 17, 2012 at 06:16 pm
We combine errands and carpool.
MJ May 17, 2012 at 06:31 pm
I only buy gas at the station near the corner of Lee Chapel and Old Keene Mill Road!
Stephanie Zeman May 17, 2012 at 07:11 pm
We car pool with other couples for nights out when possible. Bought a freezer so we can freeze more and shop less often.
ABK May 17, 2012 at 07:51 pm
We started walking to the store and church. It is wonderful living in Burke because you can actually walk to things.
Liz Crawford May 17, 2012 at 08:55 pm

danielle May 19, 2012 at 05:59 pm

I try to fill up at Costco. Lowest prices.
Gina Lincicum May 21, 2012 at 02:17 pm
I do a combination of things: use Giant gas rewards occasionally (only if .50 or better), group my errands to drive less, carpool with other families, and earn free gas cards from points programs (through my bank, MyPoints, and others).
erica May 21, 2012 at 03:28 pm
Walk or ride bikes when ever possible.
