ATM Skimmer Scam at Fairfax County ATMs

Detectives are hoping to identify three suspects in a case of ATMs in the Fairfax area compromised by skimming devices. Attached to the ATM card reader, the skimmer is typically able to steal the card information for the thief to use fraudulently later.

Bank security contacted police earlier this week about a skimming attempt at a SunTrust Bank on Burke Commons Road. Three men are seen on security cameras attempting to place the skimming device. One of the men was carrying a pizza box, according to police.

After further investigation, police found that two other ATMs had been compromised: SunTrust banks at 6126 Rolling Road and 9400 Richmond Highway.

The bank has reportedly identified affected customers, but police warn local residents to check their bank statements closely for any discrepancies. 

ATM users are also encouraged to look closely at ATMs when they are making financial transactions. The skimming devices may appear on the front of the machines and may be affixed loosely to machines with tape.
