Brush Fire Burns Two Acres Along I-495

Firefighters responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m.

A brush fire burned two acres along I-495 in Springfield Wednesday afternoon before being subdued by Fairfax County firefighters.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded to the fire, in woods next to Trailside Park, around 3:30 p.m., Battalion Chief Thomas W. Graling said. Two fire engine companies and one brush truck were called to the scene before the fire was subdued.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined yet, but Graling said spring months are prone to fires, when dead leaves and plants from fall and winter have not been replaced by new plants.

Still, according to Graling, weather alone could not have caused the fire.

"It still needs a source of ignition," Graling said. "That's where the human element comes in."
