Fairfax County Police Clear Up Reports of Alleged Attempted Abduction in Burke

Parents were exchanging emails and trying to clarify what happened on Sunday, May 4 on Burke Lake Road in Burke.

Fairfax County Police are trying to clear up reports among residents of an alleged attempted abduction on Sunday, May 4 on Burke Lake Road.

Police say they were contacted last week by numerous residents throughout the county regarding a string of circulated emails discussing an alleged attempted abduction of a young girl near athletic fields, located in the 9600 block of Burke Lake Road, according to an FCPD news release.

To clarify, police were called to a home on the evening of Thursday, May 8, to take a report of a suspicious person, police say.

Officers determined a young girl did speak with a man in that parking lot on Sunday, May 4. The man asked for help with directions and using his GPS. Wisely, police say, the girl declined to help him and walked away. The man returned to his car, where a female passenger was waiting, and drove away.

While this incident is suspicious in nature, officers have determined there was no criminal act, according to FCPD. However, this incident serves as an example of the importance of speaking to your children about their personal safety and what to do when approached by a stranger, they advise. Parents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to police.
