The Fairfax County police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened Thursday afternoon. Police responded to a call about a domestic dispute around 2:40 p.m. in the 7900 block of Pebble Brook Court in the Springfield area, where the complainant advised a man was armed with a firearm, according to a recent FCPD news release.

When they arrived at the residence, police encountered the man — 46-year-old John Geer — outside of the home and officers conducted negotiations with him at the front door, trying to get him to come out of the house peacefully.

According to the release, a patrol officer fired a single shot at some point during the negotiation. The shot struck the man, and he then barricaded himself inside the residence.

To provide aid for Geer after the shot was fired, the police hostage rescue vehicle was used to allow safe entry into the residence. Once inside, tactical officers found Greer deceased, police said.

PIO Lucy Caldwell said the details of the encounter are currently under review, so it has not been revealed why the patrol officer fired a shot. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave as the investigation continues.

Information released about this incident by the FCPD Public Information Office are currently based on a preliminary investigation and are subject to be revised as the police continue their investigation.
