Man Dies After Being Struck by a Car in Springfield

The man was crossing Old Keene Mill Road outside of the crosswalk when he was hit.

A man died on Sunday after being struck by a car in Springfield.

Thomas Sullivan, 74, was walking south across the eastbound lanes of Old Keene Mill Road shortly after 8 a.m. on Jan. 19 when he was struck by a 2008 Mazda 323. The Mazda was headed southbound on Greeley Boulevard and made a left turn on a green light onto eastbound Old Keene Mill Road.

Sullivan, according to police, was not in a crosswalk. The Mazda struck Sullivan while in the left lane. Sullivan was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Don Gotthardt, public information officer for Fairfax County Police Department, confirmed the incident was not a hit and run. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.

The 80-year-old Mazda driver, who police have identified but whose name was not released, has not been charged. It appears the driver was not at fault, but Gotthardt said the incident is still under investigation.
