Hundreds enjoyed Target's celebration; others participated in neighborhood events.

Tuesday evening, hundreds of area residents participated in the 28th annual National Night Out

Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out is is a community-building campaign begun in 1984 to:

  1. Increase awareness of crime prevention;
  2. Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs;
  3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships;
  4. Send criminals a message that neighborhoods are organized to prevent crime.

Target, the national corporate sponsor for National Night Out, hosted a festival complete with live music, dance entertainment, food, and safety demonstrations from 6 to 9 p.m. in their Fairfax store parking lot.  Other festivities were hosted across the county by community organizations.
