August is over and September has finally arrived. Before we settle into the month, here's a look back at the top five most-read crime stories on Burke Patch in August.


5. Fairfax County Police Arrest 23 Men in Prostitution Bust

Fairfax County police arrested 23 men on Aug. 15. in a prostitution bust at hotels in Tysons Corner, Springfield, Falls Church and Herndon. 

4. Fairfax County Police Warn of Parking Lot Scam

In early August, Fairfax County police warned residents about scammers who approached victims in parking lots. Two reported incidents occurred in Merrifield and in Seven Corners on Aug. 6 and Aug. 5, respectively.

3. Former Police Officer Sentenced for Forcible Sodomy of Ex-Girlfriend

Burke resident and former police officer and firefighter James Summers was sentenced to serve a five year-prison term after he was convicted of forcibly sodomizing his ex-girlfriend.

2. Police: Burke Woman Assaulted During Attempted Burglary

A 37-year-old Burke woman was assaulted in late August during an attempted burglary at her home. According to the police, the woman was approached at her residence by a man who tried to force himself into the home. When the woman attempted to push the man away, the man struck the woman and then fled.

1.  Multiple Car Crash on Burke Centre Parkway Injures 10

Ten people were injured in a four-car crash on Burke Centre Parkway near Coffer Woods Road on Aug. 11. The crash caused Fairfax County police to shut down the road for at least 30 minutes.
