Police Report Third Death Related to June 29 Derecho

A 19-year-old Falls Church resident died as a result of electrocution from downed power lines.

McLean District Police report Dylan Shawn Cooper, 19, of Falls Church died Sunday as a result of injuries he sustained on June 29, shortly after 11 p.m. Cooper was found unconscious, in the vicinity of downed power lines on Haycock Road in Falls Church, according to police.

The office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be electrocution and the manner to be accidental.

Cooper died Sunday, July 15, according to an obituary in the Washington Post. He had been at the Halquist Hospice in Arlington.

Two other Fairfax County residents died as a result of the derecho.

Khiet Nguyen, 27, of Burke, June 29 after a tree fell onto his 1998 Mercury while he was driving west on Old Keene Mill Drive near Bauer Drive, according to Fairfax County Police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 90-year-old woman when a tree fell on her home as she was lying in bed, according to FCPD. Another occupant of the home called 911 but was unable to reach the victim. Police, fire and rescue units responded to the home in the 8100 block of Carr Street June 29, just before 11 p.m. A construction crane and specialized tree removal equipment were brought to the scene.
