Tragedy in Springfield: Wife Accidentally Backs Over Husband After He Slips on Ice

Chong Sik Kim, 84, was walking to the mailbox when he slipped; his wife was backing the car out of the driveway. He was later pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

A tragic accident has left a Springfield man dead Wednesday, after his wife accidentally backed over him in her car, after he slipped on ice in their driveway, according to police.

Police responded to a home in the 7300 block of Hooes Road in Springfield Wednesday morning shortly after 10 a.m. for the report of a crash.

During the preliminary investigation, officers determined that one resident of the home, 84-year-old Chong Sik Kim, walked to the mailbox at the end of the driveway.

During the same time, Kim’s 72-year-old wife backed the couples’ 2009 Lexus RX5 from the garage and down the driveway.

It appears that Mr. Kim slipped on ice and fell to the ground on his way back to the house. Mrs. Kim apparently did not see him and the Lexus appears to have backed over him.

Mr. Kim was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash.

No charges will be placed.
