Burke Resident Defrauds Navy, Pleads Guilty

Received Overpayment of $159,712

Carl W. Marquis, 48, of Burke, pleaded guilty Friday to concealing pay and allowances from the United States Navy after the completion of his active duty assignment.

According to Southern Maryland Online, "[Marquis] failed to out-process and remained on the Navy’s pay system in active duty status and continued to receive full active duty pay and allowances, with a net pay of more than $8,000 each month."  This occurred after he had finished a three-month active duty assignment at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.

In all Marquis received $159,712 in overpayments from the Navy, and as of June 2011 he'd spent all but $25 thousand of that amount.

Marquis faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for March 5, 2012.
